Why I Decided to Give Up Alcohol and Become Sober

Alcohol Used to Be a Huge Part of my Life until I Decided to Go Sober in 2016! 🍺🍷🥃

IT IS ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS THAT I EVER MADE! 🙂

I was just interviewed on the Alcohol Free Life Podcast by the amazing Janey Lee Grace who is a BBC Radio hostess and Best-selling Hayhouse Author. You can listen to the podcast on all podcast platforms or here on the website: https://www.thesoberclub.com/podcast/

In this interview we go deep into Alcoholism and the effects it has on your Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual Health…

I have never shared this story in writing like this before… here goes…

*************************

I got my first Fake ID when I was 14 years old and would regularly go out to pubs, clubs and get so drunk that I would black-out and get myself into all sorts of dangerous and even life-threatening situations… my best-friend had a full beard and could get us alcohol anytime my ID got refused… we drank a lot and often.

Getting blind-drunk was then a weekly occurrence for the next 14 years of my life. It was a social expectation with my friends that we would get drunk most times we were together… Some weeks I would be drunk 3 or 4 times and even go into work completely hungover after not even sleeping.

At University I remember drinking alcohol every day for 19 days until I started to get internal bleeding and then decided enough was enough and took a break…

When I was 25 years old I got drunk on a night out and woke up the next morning with my teeth smashed in and covered in blood… apparently I got into a fight with a group of strangers but I don’t even remember… I could very easily have died that night.

But even this didn’t deter me to change my ways long term.

Alcohol for me was like social lubricant. It gets rid of awkwardness and social anxiety. Helps people to relax and enjoy themselves… but there is a dark side too.

1. PEOPLE OFTEN MAKE TERRIBLE DECISIONS WHEN THEY ARE DRUNK… for me this this might include things like; getting into fights; having sex with people I didn’t even like; and even getting arrested!

2. BEING HUNGOVER RUINS YOUR WHOLE NEXT DAY

3. WHEN YOU BLACKOUT IT IS VERY EASY FOR OTHER PEOPLE AND ENTITIES TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU

When I look back at my relationship with alcohol it was very unhealthy. I was definitely not in control.

Peer-pressure and clever marketing from alcohol companies programmed me to act in ways that were not helping me to get to my goals. I allowed this to happen and for that I take full responsibility.

My invitation for you reading this is to check-in with your Self now and your relationship with alcohol. Do you have a healthy relationship? Are you using alcohol to numb yourself? When you think about living an alcohol-free life do you get any fears coming up?

I AM SO THANKFUL THAT I HAD MY AWAKENING IN 2016 AND MADE THE DECISION TO CHANGE MY LIFE. <3

2016 was the year I had my big Awakening Experience and realised what was really important to me and could see clearly how I was sabotaging myself.

1. I was terrified of feeling my feelings and was using alcohol, food and sex to fill the void.

2. I was 4 stones overweight and looked and felt unfit, unhealthy and was on my way to an early grave.

3. I didn’t even know how to have fun with my friends without us being drunk… I tried going to clubs sober many times but it just was not the same… you can smell people’s beer breath… they spit in your ears when they talk… they stand on your feet… being sober around other drunk people was not enjoyable for me.

ADDICTIONS, FEAR, SHAME AND GUILT WILL HOLD YOU BACK FROM REACHING YOUR FULLEST POTENTIAL.

I knew I had to change.

Health became really important to me. I could not poison my body any longer. I stopped drinking alcohol and I stopped eating animal products. 🍉🥭🍒

I got more in touch with my emotions and started to heal the traumas that I was trying to cover up with my addictions.

I found new friends that did not need to be drunk to have a good time. Now I go to Sober Raves and have the most wonderful friends that share my values.

Since 2016 I believe I have consumed Alcohol around 4 times. I am glad to say that I no longer need or desire alcohol at all.

THERE IS A WHOLE NEW WORLD OUT THERE FOR YOU WHEN YOU ARE BRAVE ENOUGH TO FACE YOUR FEARS AND LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE. <3
