From Psychiatric Hospital to International Speaker: My Journey with Mental Health

From Psychiatric Hospital to International Speaker – Luke Scott

Two huge men in bright, white jackets pin me down to the ground as my mother is dragged away from me with tears streaming down her face. I thrash and kick and scream, protesting with every ounce of strength in my 10-year-old body. How can this be happening? There must be a mistake! Surely this cannot be real? The more I protest, the harder these white giants restrain me. Although I fight with all my strength, it is a battle that I cannot win. After completely exhausting myself I submit and go limp. I was a very intelligent child and knew that I had lost this fight. I felt abandoned by my family, they had sent me away to a children’s psychiatric hospital. I was alone.

Looking back at the series of events that lead to me being sent away at 10 years old I can see that the UK school system failed me in a big way. Many of my family members suffer from Mental Health issues including Schizophrenia, PTSD and Chronic Depression so I was used to seeing severe mood swings, violent outbursts and psychotic behaviour. As children we are so easily conditioned by our surroundings and bit by bit I started to copy the adults in my life as they were my main role models. My family life was undeniably dysfunctional but there was also a lot of love there. My family have been my greatest teachers, showing me what I do want and what I don’t want.

If you have experienced anything like this yourself then you will know how easy it is to slip into victim mode. I spent most of my life blaming my family, my teachers and the doctors at the hospital for how my life turned out. After spending six months in hospital with severely mentally ill children I was released with the following diagnosis:

“Luke is a very intelligent child. He suffers from episodes of extreme boredom and was not challenged enough at school.”

That was it. Nothing wrong with me. Six months of my life spent in a mental hospital because school had labelled me as a nuisance child which fuelled my episodes rather than taking the time to understand that I was just different to the other children. As I moved into High School I saw this happening more and more. Giving kids Ritalin because they are ‘hyperactive’, calling dyslexic kids ‘slow learners’, telling children they are ‘bad’ when they are just acting out because of traumas from their family life. Young people need more support from their schools, family and friends. It doesn’t work to mark us all by the same score sheet. We all have different superpowers and abilities.

A big part of my mission now is to teach young people that there is nothing wrong with them, that they are unique and to help them find their gifts. If you are a young person reading this then you need to take responsibility for your actions too. Find someone you can speak to and explain your situation to them. Ask for help. I know you might feel like nobody understands you and that you are alone but there are so many caring, kind people in the world that would help you in a heartbeat. Don’t let things escalate like I did.

A step that you can all take right now is to start helping yourself. If you are unsure of where to start my suggestion would be to educate yourself on Personal Development. Pick up a book, watch some videos or listen to an audiobook from Wayne Dyer, Abraham Hicks or any of my videos and blogs on my Social Medias. Just search for Luke Scott Mentor and you will find me.

I want you to know that:

You are loved.

You are worthy.

You are enough.

If you are suffering right now, then I want you to know from the bottom of my heart that everything is going to be ok. All you must do is decide today that you are going to change. Stop blaming other people and take responsibility for your life from this moment on. If you change, the whole world will change. Find somebody to talk to today.
